Managing Cross Cross-Cultural Negotiations

I have always wondered what it is that makes cultures different. As a Venezuelan-Greek, with strong British education, I consider myself blessed with the ability to adapt to others. However, in pressured times like the present, cross-cultural negotiations are fraught with difficulty. The pressure to sign the deal or act in a way to impress urgency, can really throw a negotiation off the rails.

Here are some top tips to avoid sabotaging yourself if you will be negotiating with those working with a different cultural lens:

Build rapport

Take time to build the relationship and understand the other parties; not only what they are looking for in interacting with you, but also their relative cultural drivers (the leading indicator is Hofstede’s index on cultural variations.

Communication – be respectful of symbols or associations

Be aware of etiquette in terms of actions as well as symbolisms, which can both inadvertendly impact your discussions negatively . For example, binding documents in a purple folder, may not go down too well in Italy where it is associated with bad luck…

Learn from what we call Cultural Ambassadors

If you work in a multinational corporation track people from the country that you are likely to be engaging with, and discuss how things are done in their countries, the real dos and don’ts in their business culture.

How are decisions made?

Be aware of the relative importance (or not) of hierarchy and power distances. Autocratic behaviour is acceptable in high power-distance countries, such as the Middle East or Africa but clashes with the more equitable Anglo-Saxon cultures.

Negotiation lengths

Timeframes for agreements and negotiations vary; generally, the further east from Europe, the longer the negotiation timeframes. Do not push for quick responses or exert pressure for agreements in China or the Middle East.

Demonstrate sensitivity to gender issues

This is particularly relevant for women in male-dominated culture. A lead female negotiator may face resistance in what are more “masculine” cultures. Whilst in a lot of countries the traditional role of women is changing, best to err on the side of caution and split the chairing of the negotiation with by both a man and a woman.

Athena Mentoring Program

aquitude-athenaA Mutual Mentoring Programme

Traditional training and development focuses on one-off interventions with the help of cementing learning within a very short timeframe. However our brain is programmed to learn through experience and as such Aquitude’s Athena mentoring program is designed to offer experiential learning opportunities between entrepreneurs and corporate professionals.

This program is intended to enable both:

  • peer mentoring
  • reverse mentoring, depending on individual and organisational requirements.

We call this Mutual Mentoring, where both the entrepreneur and the corporate professional mentor each other with pre-agreed outputs; so both parties benefit with specific learning opportunities. It is a helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and respect. It is less of a formalized professional relationship and more of a structured learning partnership.

Benefits

Hands on experiential learning through One-to-One Mentoring: The most powerful component of the Athena Mutual Mentoring Program is the direct access to the knowledge, experience, and insight of
a more-experienced professional from another organization.

  • Non-executive / advisory positions in cutting edge companies
  • Targeted skills-development in Aquitude’s Skills Academy delivered virtually and on-person
  • One-one coaching in personal areas of development such as Managing Transitions, Diffusing Confilct, Managing Difficult Conversations, Coaching yourself to the top, etc
  • Vibrant and powerful connections: Creating strong networks is one of the keys to professional success for both individuals and the organizations they represent. The Athena Mutual Mentoring Programme provides an exceptional opportunity for mentees to engage with and learn from a collection of accomplished emerging leaders in the business community.
  • The Athena Mutual Mentoring Alumni Network: alumni to this programme have the opportunity to join this exclusive network of accomplished business leaders from across the globe.

Note: If your organisation has between 5 and 249 employees, you may benefit from a £1000 grant towards the Athena Programme.

Aquitude CEO – Christina Ioannidis Talks to the Sunday Times.

ci-press-sunday-timesChristina gives advice to women working in male dominated teams. This article was run in the Sunday Times (UK) on Sunday the 13th September 2009.

What really shows is that we prefer workigin for people who are like ourselves. Women need to understand that, when they are working in an environment where they are the minority, they may need to adapt their leadership style.

It’s not about changing who you are but being intelligent about how you approach a different culture. If you were going to a business meeting in Japan you would do a little bit of cross-cultural training so this is what [women should] do when it comes to working in an all male environment.

Entrepreneur profiles

Alastair Mitchell and Andy McLoughlin are co-founders of Huddle, an online service that provides simple, secure workspaces containing powerful project and collaboration tools.

Alastair and Andy used their personal savings to set up Huddle in November 2006. “Our first big break came when we found a software company that really believed in our vision,” says Andy. “We made a deal with them where they built the first version of Huddle in exchange for shares in the company.” The pair went on to secure seed investment from entrepreneur Charles McGregor and venture capital from Eden Ventures.

Huddle now has 30 employees in London and Chicago, with 60 per cent of its business coming from outside the UK. The Financial Times named the company as one of its ten start-ups to watch in 2009 and Alastair and Andy say their ambition is for Huddle to become, “the Facebook of the business world”.

Andrea Photiou always knew she wanted to be her own boss and knew that the time was right. Andrea says, “My background was in creative writing and journalism. But I loved music and I was always making compilations when I really should have been studying! After trying to balance my academic studies with my love of music I was encouraged by Reggae singer Lorna Gayle to follow my passion, and I did.”

Andrea decided to combine her twin loves of music and media to create a radio station, but it wasn’t always easy. Andrea remembers, “I felt frustrated by the lack of variety within mainstream radio and being a young woman in male dominated industry was hard.”

Andrea stuck with her idea and created Playvybz, a radio station that would not only be broadcast online to millions around the world but also work closely with her local community. Playvybz offers lessons in radio, music production and journalism to up and coming local DJs through schools; and provides marketing solutions to unsigned singers and bands

Natasha Faith and her business partner Semhal Zemikael, both aged 21 and based in London, launched their semi-precious jewellery business La Diosa in January 2007 after receiving an initial loan of £5,000 from the Prince’s Trust.

La Diosa means ‘The Goddess’ in Spanish, and perfectly reflects the divine designs of the girls’ jewellery. Both girls have worked for other people before and do say they learnt a lot from their experiences, but also said that they found their age often held them back as employers rarely let them express their creativity.
Both girls, who are Make Your Mark ambassadors, decided to start the business after travelling around the world for 9 months, in which time they learnt various jewellery making techniques, and these international influences are easily visible in their creations.

Their jewellery has been worn by the likes of Baroness Amos, Leona Lewis and Kelly Rowland. The striking jewellery has also been featured on VOGUE.Com and is stocked in the prestigious Harvey Nichols.

Aquitude CEO Talks to the Observer About Women in the Boardroom.

Aquitude CEO, Christina Ioannidis was quoted in today’s Observer on issues facing women in the boardroom of the city’s companies. Research  commissioned by the Observer reveals that UK boardrooms are still overwhelmingly male-dominated, despite the fact that more than nine out of 10 companies claim to have an equal opportunities policy in place.

Christina Ioannidis, CEO of Aquitude, a leadership and organisational development consultancy specialising in diversity, recommends women find themselves a mentor or mentors who can give advice and act as a sounding board. “As with everything, having a diverse range of mentors, each with differing experience, viewpoints and contacts, is key,” she says.

Ioannidis also counsels women to be strategic and to work out their objectives by taking time out to evaluate their skills, their strengths and their weaknesses.
